CUMBERLAND COUNTY – Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office 2024 SWAT “Operator of the Year” and Patrol Sergeant, John Coley, has been terminated by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office according to Public Information Officer Gary Howard.
The termination comes after the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) launched an unspecified investigation into the Sergeant. Though our sources have shared more specific details, the supporting documentation has been withheld due to the ongoing investigation.
Rule 16 of Criminal Procedure and the Tennessee Public Records Act mean that further details will not be released until the conclusion of the investigation AND prosecution (if pursued). The only exception would be a voluntary statement by the TBI.
We asked the Sheriff’s Office to either confirm or deny information from our sources that the “deed in question involved a female who may have had developmental issues or a handicap?” but the Sheriff’s office could not comment on specifics.
Due to the serious nature of the accusations, we have decided to hold-off on releasing the additional information provided to us by our sources until we can corroborate the specifics.
Coley has been employed by the CCSO since 2022 when he came from the Nashville area after serving as a commissioned officer in security management and has been promoted multiple times since joining the Sheriff’s Office.
Public Information Officer Gary Howard said in a statement,
“Sgt. John Coley has been terminated from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office following the initiation of a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) case at the request of the 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. His dismissal stems from violations of departmental ethics policies and conduct unbecoming of an officer.”

Stay tuned for more information. All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in the court of law. We have also requested information from the TBI and will update this story if provided comment.
